In this module, we will examine some of the most prominent F/OSS implementation strategies. Open standards represent a strategy to free individuals and organizations from vendor lock-in and restricted compatibility. LibreOffice is an obvious low-hanging fruit for any organization that wants to leverage F/OSS, and Linux operating systems are another. Both are in one sense very straightforward, and in another sense complex. The complexities are very related to users’ comfort zones, support staff technical skill sets, and the degree to which an organization’s culture accepts change. In this module, you will be installing software and trying things out for yourself. A standard precaution before making changes to your computer is to run a backup of your system and user files (this applies to any installation or system change, not just to F/OSS tools). Please back up your system before each installation activity.
